Earlier this month, the OCZ Onyx graced through my test bed and went to show that if optimized right, even an ultra-low cost SSD can show gainful performance increases in your system. The Onyx was actually one of the most inexpensive SSD's I'd seen yet, going for as low as $45CDN on sale! However, the Onyx was optimized vastly for read speed, to help give visual performance increases with Windows and application launches. One area the Onyx fell short on was it's slower write speeds compared to more mainstream models.
Today, I have the 40gb OCZ Vertex 2 SSD here to go head to head with the Onyx. The Vertex 2 is from the mainstream performance line of SSD's that OCZ has on the market. This model features blistering fast read/write speeds, nearing 280mbps, and a much higher sustained write speed as a result of that. Of course the Vertex 2 has pricing more in line with most mainstream SSD's - the 40gb model reviewed here today is around $125CDN at most retailers (though often on sale for lower). Let's jump in and see how much of a performance difference these numbers will make against the more humble Onyx!
